Since 2006, Dans le Noir ? restaurant, located in the heart of London in the traditional Clerkenwell district, has been offering the opportunity to taste gourmet, creative and seasonal cuisine in complete darkness, accompanied and served by unexpected guides. Dinner or lunch in pitch darkness is an original experience that allows us to re-evaluate our perception of taste while reclaiming our senses, to reinvigorate our relationship with the world and others and to experience a surprising encounter with something different.

To go further, Dans le Noir ? also has a Sensory Lounge offering convivial workshops: delicatessen and wine tastings selected by our sensory experts and our Sommelier Fabio Sutera. It is also a place to meet and discover others, as popularised in the Richard Curtis film "About Time". At Dans le Noir ? we pay particular attention to our ecological impact and more generally to matters related to social and environmental responsibility. We take particular care with the traceability of meat and fish, and use a large proportion of organic fruits and vegetables. Fred Dickieson gastronomic and creative cuisine is based on the selection of high quality ingredients. All our menus are tested and improved through tastings by sensory experts in pitch darkness.


Blind wine tasting in pitch darkness accompanied by our sommelier Fabio Sutera: rediscover wine through an original and multi-sensory approach combining taste and smell.
On request, the team can also organise tastings of delicatessen products. An excellent suggestion for a Wine Club, a stag do or a hen party.


Plan memorable, effective and striking Team Building events for your team. By going off the beaten track, participants will be forced to step outside their comfort zone and cooperate to find solutions. A convivial experience that breaks with conventions and hierarchies as you dive into darkness and discover others... without preconceptions.


By prior reservation only, Dans le Noir ? offers Kids Tasting sessions, to awaken the senses of children between 6 and 12 at an emotional session with a difference. As per the official announcement of UK government, as of Friday, March 20th after service, Dans le Noir ? London will be closed until further notice. The safety of our team members and our customers is our priority. If you have a reservation in the coming month, our team will be in touch by email. Be a chef in London: what is your background working in a restaurant?

My background started on a pig farm next to the Atlantic Ocean in a tiny island off the coast of Canada. I moved to London at the age of 19 and dove straight into a restaurant that served British food from oysters to beef and kidney puddings. My experience has included spellbinding events with Lorna Wing in the Naughties, along with events coordinator at ICA- thru to owning my own gastropub restaurant, working with Tom Conran and a seminal 2 years with Fergus Henderson at the inception of St. John. I am the meatballs at Leon and after 3 years working with the still spellbindingly humble and earnest Neal’s Yard Dairy, I had the supreme honor of being the Late and unmatched in innovations of artisan cheesemaking- Mary Holbrook’s cheesemaker. I eat, sleep and breathe food, making it, producing it, cooking and eating it- quite often mid meal thinking of my next!

Be a chef in London: how do you design a menu for a restaurant?

Designing a menu is a totally collaborative process. I learned a lot about this from creating bespoke events with VIP clients with both Lorna Wing and at the ICA. You need to listen and understand the event, space, person and allow all of the possibilities in- whilst clearing out what the client doesn’t want! It can be done alone, but having an epic kitchen brigade and an hospitable service team-who always have elegant take on firsthand knowledge and feedback.

Be a chef in London: what is your favorite dish?

Anything at St John, London or ANYTHING at any time at Chez Denis, Paris. my Mom’s western omelette, or my grandmother’s clam chowder- octopus from the giant bbq at Nonna Rosa, Mola di Bari.

Be a chef in London: what is your most unforgettable memory about food?

So many, the first steak with my Dad and his pals at the age of 8, key lime pie made by my auntie Joycecool. Or even my first meal with my partner of 24 years.

Be a chef in London: What “The Taste of Silence” represents to you

As a chef, I feel we have a splendid wide multipurpose space with we can do practically anything. The comptoir is being widely accepted. The tapas bar will be fun for interaction and the “a la carte” offers a supreme selection for the vegan diner.

It needs to be fun, and normal except for the creative potential of exploring different means of communicating as a chef at DLN- we have already added super touches and tweaks to the existing menu, a perfumed a table cocktail, a little zip here, a crunch there, all to stretch and expand the limits of the team of the whole theatrical experience.

At Dans le Noir ?, the unique dining in the dark restaurant in London, we collect everything that may glow in the dark prior your experience. Cellphone, watches, no source of light is tolerated. It is one of the most impacting principle of the night: you will reconnect with your friends, colleagues or partner and even meet with some new friends at your table while never be disturbed by a text message or a notification on your phone. It’s one of the great power of the dark room, so enjoy!

For once, no one will look at you or judge you. We are all convinced that using social media platform gives us credit and gratitude. In the dark room, you reconnect with yourself and your senses. The French Prime Minister in 2004 has experienced the dining in the dark restaurant in Paris and during his introspection he didn’t say a word. Everyone was very worried but at the end, he told the founder of the concept, Edouard de Broglie: “Tonight, I was with myself and it felt good.”. And that’s a major reason for the VIP to come at the restaurant because no one will recognise them and ask them a selfie!

Entering the dark room is a powerful experience, you are guided by one of our blind or vision impaired staff and that person becomes your eyes for the evening. But more than a human exchange, you will have to guess what is on your plates and trust us in pitch darkness your taste buds can be confused. No cellphones mean no endless food photography’s session, just the pleasure of enjoying the moment for its true flavor. Our plates are designed by our Chef to awaken your senses (you can even use your finger to eat, no one will blame you for that!). Is it soft as a pork fillet or tasty as a braised lamb? In the dark room, you are losing your preconceived ideas brought by vision.
